In spite of drama, Jackson's mother wins kids' custody

The desires Michael Jackson spoken in his will began to come into certainty Monday during a lengthy court hearing, with his mother placed firmly in charge of rearing his children and the two men he designated still at the reins of his financial empire.

while media fury buzzed outside, a blow motion from Jackson's longtime dermatologist injected some drama inside the courtroom: An attorney for the doctor, Arnold Klein, tried to enter objections to the parenting of Jackson's children.

Klein has had a lengthy part in Jackson's story line. He not only served as Jackson's doctor, but one of his employees, Deborah Rowe, married Jackson in 1996 and gave birth to two of the singer's children. Most recently, Klein's medical records have been subpoenaed as part of the police investigation of Jackson's death.

Given tabloid reports that he is the biological father of Jackson's two oldest children, the attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, quickly told the judge and dozens of reporters covering the hearing that biology wasn't the source of the objections.

The King of Pop’s heirs - 12-year-old Prince Michael, 10-year-old Paris Michael and 7-year-old Prince Michael II, known as Blanket - learn whether Judge Mitchell Beckloff names their grandmother, Katherine Jackson, their guardian. Debbie Rowe, mother of two of the children, and Katherine Jackson reached a deal last week paving the way for Katherine Jackson.

No such deal has been reached on the Thriller’s finances.

Kathering Jackson and Jacko’s attorney, John Branca, and music executive John McClain, are all vying for control. The judge also will decide how to divy up Jackson’s estate, which has been described in court documents as having an estimated value of more than $500 million; its actual current worth is about $100 million, but could increase in value to $200 million or more with some financial restructuring.

The judge also has been asked to set an allowance for Katherine Jackson and her grandchildren.

Dr. Arnold Klein formerly took Michael Jackson to the staff next door to his -- sprint by a gynecologist focusing in vaginal innovation to achieve a slight acne treatment on the singer under full anesthesia.
When we spoke with Dr. Harvey Richmond who told us ... around 2003, Dr. Klein asked him if he could use Richmond's surgery center in his office to perform a procedure on Jackson.
Dr. Richmond says, per Klein's request, he got an anesthesiologist and a scrub tech who worked on Jackson.
Dr. Richmond says he found it "odd" that Dr. Klein performed "some sort of acne treatment" with full anesthesia. Dr. Richmond says he believes the anesthesia used was Propofol, the same drug that may have killed Jackson.
Dr. Richmond says the 2003 procedure was the only time Dr. Klein used his office for Jackson.
And there's this -- Dr. Richmond says Jackson stiffed him on the bill, eventually only paying half after Richmond threatened to take the singer to Beverly Hills small claims court.

Jeff Bridges assures the new "TRON" is just as innovative as the 27-year-old original.
The 59-year-old actor and star of the original film came to Comic Con Thursday to help present early footage from "TRON: Legacy," due in 2010.
Bridges notes that when "TRON" was released in 1982, the Internet and personal computers didn't exist. The futuristic tale took viewers to a digitized virtual world, a concept that was decades ahead of its time.
Despite modern moviegoers' everyday interaction with technology, Bridges says he "can guarantee you're going to get the same kind of pop with this one. Everything's going to be super-isled."

The Baltimore middle-school teacher, who is married to energy company employee Henry Hager, launches a UNICEF initiative today to help needy children. USA TODAY talks to Hager about kids, drawls and frequent-flier miles.

Children's advocate: Hager is part of UNICEF's Next Generation committee, which aims to save and improve the lives of children around the world. Her twin sister, Barbara, is also part of it. "I wanted to work with an organization that defended the rights of children. One thing that's great about UNICEF is that they have things for the kids that I teach. They have things for sixth-graders. They have things for younger students, like my third-graders that I taught in D.C.," Hager says.

That the author does so with one of her more outlandish premises speaks to her strengths as a storyteller as she continues to tickle funny bones and touch hearts.
The plot goes Swayze-crazy à la Ghost when Lara Lington, a 27-year-old novice headhunter left in the lurch by both her dream beau and her best pal/business partner, is suddenly haunted by her just-deceased great-aunt Sadie.
Happening in the guise of the willful, party-hearty flapper she once was instead of her ancient withered self, Sadie demands that her grandniece track down her precious beaded necklace. She also is openly scornful of Lara's way of life — or lack thereof, especially in the story section.

Nicolas Cage vs. Seth Rogen: Who prevails?

Nicolas Cage has been a Ghost Rider, a Lord of War and even a little Bangkok Dangerous, but now he could be ready to take on his toughest adversary: Seth Rogen.
Variety reports Cage is in talks to play bad guy to Rogen's hero in director Michel Gondry's Green Hornet film. There were few details, but considering all the idiosyncratic talents involved, well, it's just better that way.
Stranger still, Cameron Diaz is in talks to play the film's love interest, which presumably means she must choose between Cage and Rogen.

Outside the courthouse, Waylett, who celebrates his 20th birthday today, was quick to make amends with both his fans and employers. (Incidentally, how much you wanna bet he opts for a quiet night in?)
"I extend my sincere apologies to the producers, cast and crew and all at Warners and most especially to all Harry Potter fans," he said.
The next time Vincent Crabbe wants to get high, he may want to stick with his magic broomstick.

Star magazine reporter Kate Major -- who was out to dinner with the recently separated star of TLC's "Jon & Kate Plus 8" at Third Avenue eatery Accademia di Vino Saturday night -- went into rehab in May, a friend of hers claimed to Page Six.
According to the friend, top Gosselin was Major's first assignment when she returned to the celebrity weekly after the alleged rehab hiatus. But Major denied that she was in rehab and called the story "absolutely false."
Major, who hails from LA, was on staff at In Touch before getting hired as a senior reporter at Star.
"She's a crackerjack reporter, very talented, very good-looking," said one of her bosses. "Sure, she uses her charms to get stories. Don't we all?" Major has previously been able to get close to people like Britney Spears' ex J.R. Rotem and Lindsay Lohan

Best-selling writer McCourt departs this life

Frank McCourt, writer of best-seller Angela's Ashes, has died of cancer in a New York hospice.
The 78-year-old Irish-American writer was suffering from meningitis and had recently been treated for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Angela's Ashes, a journal of McCourt's childhood in Ireland, sold millions of copies and won the Pulitzer Prize.
Before the book's 1996 publication, McCourt was a New York high school teacher for 30 years.

Taylor come back home after operation

Elizabeth has been released from a Los Angeles hospital after suffering operation.
The 77-year-old Hollywood celebrity was admitted to a medical center near her home in Beverly Hills on Monday, with reports claiming she was sensitively tired following the death of her long-term pal Michael Jackson.
Her spokesperson slammed the claims, insisting: "(She is) in for standard tests and a minor, though painful, surgical procedure. That's it. No drama, no shrieking, no sedation required. Nobody on her staff is worried. Period."
And after five days in hospital, Taylor has returned home to continue her recuperation.
She writes on her Twitter.com blog, "I'm home from the hospital sore, but intact. Of course I'm still grieving for Michael... I always will."
"I've had many tragedies in my life, but I guess they have all taught me something. I have to look at it that way."
